Retinopatia de Prematuritate (ROP)

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disease of the retina developed by preterm or low birth weight infants, to the emergence of which a multitude of factors contribute. The pathophysiology is not completely understood, restricting treatment and prevention of this devastating disease. The disease may present mild or it can progress to retinal detachment and final blindness. As the survival rate of premature newborns increases, so does the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity.
