Discharge to sanitary sewer

2020
Abstract Discharge of desalination plants to wastewater systems is a disposal practice frequently used at small-size desalination plants, and is usually feasible where the volume of concentrate discharged to the receiving wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is at least an order of magnitude smaller than the volume of plant raw wastewater influent. The cost of discharge is typically limited to expenditures for conveyance of concentrate into the wastewater collection system and is thus low. Concentrate is managed as industrial effluent with quantity and quality regulated to have no negative impact on the integrity of the wastewater collection system and WWTP operations. Increased salinity can impact WWTP effluent reuse, for irrigation of salinity sensitive crops, flowers, turf grass, and trees.
