A Simple Methodology for Sizing of Stand-Alone PV-Battery System

Due to the higher cost and random nature of intermittent renewable energy (RE) resources, it is difficult to plan, integrate and operate an electric power system. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the appropriate size of the RE and related energy storage for the efficient, economical and reliable operation of the electrical power system. In this study, a simple yet effective sizing strategy for distributed battery energy storage system (BESS) in the distribution networks under photovoltaic (PV) penetration level is presented. And the effect of inappropriate selection of battery sizing on system efficiency and cost is discussed. MATLAB simulation and load flow are performed to validate the proposed design and to demonstrate the negative impact of inappropriate selection of a battery sizing.
