On "Sentence-ending Topic-comment Sentence"

2008
This paper discusses the subject-predicate inverted sentence in the traditional grammar and compares this kind of sentences with the canonical topic-comment sentences in the syntactic, prosodic, semantic and pragmatic perspectives, and concludes that it is more appropriate to call them "sentence-ending topic-comment sentence".There is a restrictive one-to-one relationship between the sentence-ending topic-comment structure and the canonical topic structure, which has revised Gundel's theory(1998).At last, the author makes an attempt to explain the pragmatic differences between the canonical topic sentences and sentence-ending topic-comment sentences and the communicational motivations of these two kinds of sentences.
