Evaluation of the Clinical Efficacy of Xanthan-Based Chlorhexidine Gel (Chlosite) in the Non-Surgical Treatment of Chronic Periodontitis

2013
Aim: The present study was conducted to “Evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of Chlosite [xanthan based chlorhexidine (Xan-CHX)] gel used as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) compared to scaling and root planing (SRP) alone in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods: A total of 40 sites selected from 20 patients presenting with chronic periodontitis (age group 25 - 55 years) of both sexes, with pocket depth of ≥5mm were recruited for the study. A split mouth design was employed with one site receiving SRP + Xan-CHX gel (Group A) and the other receiving SRP only (Group B) and all the clinical parameters - Plaque index, Gingival index, Probing Pocket depth and Clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded at baseline, 30 th day, 90 th day and 180 th day. Results: Results demonstrated that, significant reduction in plaque index and gingival index scores were observed in both the groups till the end of the study period (6 months). Probing depth (PD) and Clinical attachment loss (CAL) also showed significant improvement in both the groups. However, Group A (sites which received SRP + Xan-CHX gel treatment) showed greater improvements in all of these parameters compared to Group B (sites which received SRP only). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that the adjunctive use of Xan-CHX gel with SRP resulted in a statistically significant improvement in probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) reduction compared to SRP alone.
