New or Rare Mosses of Alabama North of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont

1989
Seven mosses are added to the flora of Alabama and seven are reported for a second time. There have been several studies of the rich bry- oflora of Alabama starting with Mohr (1901), and continuing with Harvill (1949, 1950, 1951, 1952), Wilkes (1965), and others. Since Wilkes collected extensively in 1952-1953 (for his Ph.D. disserta- tion) there has not been a concentrated study of the bryophytes for the state. Two of the present authors have had opportunities to study bryophytes off and on in the state since the fall of 1986 and some of the results are presented below. The bryophyte her- barium at UNA was examined as well, and some collections from there are included. This paper pre- sents an additional seven moss taxa, indicated by an asterisk, that are new to Alabama. Also there are seven taxa included that have only a single previous record for the state. The records here are from the northern portion of Alabama, which includes the Highland Rim, Cumberland Plateau, and Alabama Valley and Ridge (Sapp & Emplaincourt 1975). The Coastal Plain and Piedmont records are presented separately. All of the collections, except those indicated otherwise, were identified by the senior author. Voucher spec- imens are deposited at UNA and uwsp, and dupli- cates, when available, are at DUKE, MO, and NY.
