Objective: To determine the frequency of various anatomical variations of the cystic duct (CD) insertion with common hepatic duct (CHD) in Kosovo female population determined by ERCP. Methods: This study was conducted at department of endoscopy, clinic of surgery, University Clinical Center of Kosova. A prospective study of all female patients, who underwent ERCP for different reasons between June 2010 and December 2012 (a total of 129 female patients) at our department was undertaken. Data was analyzed including patients’ demographics and ERCP images analyzing type of CD insertion with CHD. Results: Out of 129 female patients, the mean age was 54.6 years. Most patients who underwent ERCP were between 60-69 years (20.9%). Regarding CD insertion with CHD, upper right insertion (URI) was the highest number of patients 56 (43.4%), whereas the upper left insertion (ULI) was the lowest number of patients 2 (1.55%). Contrary to others who reported lower percentage of lower CD insertion, we observed 14.7% of left lower insertion (LLI) Conclusion: Anatomic variations of CD insertion with CHD are not uncommon in our female population. These anatomic variants are prone to injuries during surgery. Thus knowing biliary anatomy and common anatomical variations is prerequisite of every Surgeon.
