Determination of Clearance Rate in Four Filtering Mussel Species

2006
Clearance rate was determined in four filtering mollusk species, mussel Mytilus edulis,Ruditapes philippinarum, oyster Crassostrea gigas and Saxidomus purpurtus by flowing tanks. It was found that the clearance rate was(0.0.390±0.098)L/(g·h),(0.362±0.064)L/(g·h),(0.204±0.046)L/(g·h) and((0.041)±0.008)L/g·h for mussel,Ruditapes philippinarum, oyster and Saxidomus purpurtus, respectively. The maximal and minimal clearance rates occurred at 12-h interval period within 24 hours in the shellfish, for the mussel and oyster the maximum at 20:00 and 8:00,rapid changes and the minimum at 4:00,16:00 and 0:00,12:00;for Ruditapes philippinarum and Saxidomus purpurtus the maximum at 4:00,16:00 and 0:00,12:00,the minimum at 0:00,12:00 and 4:00,16:00 with slow changes.
