A Model for the Effect of Glia on the Communication Amongst Neurons

2019
In the course of synaptic connection, which is effective in the formation and learning of cognitive processes, the role of glia cells has been taken into consideration only in recent years. In this context, the studies conducted by the neuroscience community are mainly experimental; however, certain processes related to signal communication between glia and nerve cells cannot be investigated experimentally. In that regard, an quintessential approach to overcome this complication is to take advantage of the mathematical models, when experiments do not suffice. In this study, a mathematical model is proposed to elucidate the role of nitric oxide, which is reported to be crucial in three-part synaptic model of long-term potentiation and the simulation results obtained from this mathematical model are discussed.
