McCulloch traces Gomez' (1888-1963) evolution into modernity and existentialism within the context of the same evolution among writers throughout Europe. He begins with the making of a bohemian in the second decade of the 20th century, then examines particular novels and short stories to illustrate his development into the poetics of abstraction.
