Effects of Cd on mechanical properties and damping capacities of Mg-0.6Zr-0.4Zn alloy

2008
The effects of Cd on mechanical properties and damping capacities of Mg-0.6Zr-0.4Zn alloy were studied by SEM,X-ray diffractometer and dynamic thermomechanical analyser. The results show that adding Cd has no significant effects on the tensile strength of the alloy, while the elongation is enhanced obviously. The fracture mode transfers from cleavage fracture to quasi-cleavage fracture. Moreover, due to the interaction of grain coarsening and solute atoms increasing, the damping capacities of the alloy increase along with the content of Cd adding, but when the Cd content is higher than 0.6%,the increase rate slows down. The alloy damping behaviour can be explained by G-L dislocation pinning theory.
