Traffic Density Modeling for an Adaptive Traffic Management of a Mixed Vehicle Flow

Transportation directly affects the economic development of each country. Therefore, moving on the road, which is guaranteed to be safe, smooth and shortest is always necessary for the system management point of view. This study focuses on traffic density analysis for an adaptive management of traffic lights, which corresponds to a mixed vehicle flow entering the crossroad and captured by the surveillance camera. The traffic density is modeled by the area occupancy on the road which is statistically determined on the captured video sequence in terms of the number and types of vehicles with their sizes. This model has demonstrated better timing performance for traffic management than other existing methods since it relies entirely on the actual number of vehicles entering the traffic crossroad.
