Previous experimental investigations by several authors have shown that nifedipine has an antianginal action, due to the following mechanisms: 1. Relaxation of vascular smooth muscle, particularly in the coronary bed 2. Increase of total cardiac output due to increase of venous return 3. Slight negative inotropic effect on cardiac muscle [4–6, 8, 9].
