Experience of Cell Saver in Scoliosis Surgery

1987
Blood transfusion is necessary in scoliosis surgery in many cases. But homologous transfusions are not innocuous because they introduce the risk of serum hepatitis and various immune reactions.Autotransfusion is the best method to minimize these risks. In our hospital, scoliosis surgery has been performed in an autotransfusion program since 1981. Recently we tried the intraoperative autotransfusion method of cell saver in 8 cases of scoliosis. The ratio of the reinfused R. B. C. to total blood loss was 31.3±10.5%. Additional transfusion was required in all cases and frozen autogenous blood and reinfused blood was used in 5 cases in which additional homologous blood was not necessary.
