IMPLEMENTATION OF STRUCTURED MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY ROUNDS IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

2019
Objectives To determine the feasibility and acceptability of utilizing the Ottawa Morbidity and Mortality Rounds Model (OM3) in an Obstetrics and Gynecology department. Methods A quality improvement before-and-after intervention study was conducted. A large, urban, tertiary academic Obstetrics and Gynecology department was introduced to the OM3 model to standardize Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Rounds case selection and analysis and to provide a mechanism to implement the resulting recommendations. Attendance was monitored for staff physicians during the study period. A questionnaire was distributed to staff physicians prior to the intervention and post-intervention. Results There was a statistically significant rise in the average M&M Rounds attendance (8.9 ± 1.95vs. 13.9 ± 3.90, p Conclusions A structured model for M&M Rounds can be easily implemented in Obstetrics and Gynecology to facilitate case selection and analysis. This model provides a formal mechanism to act on the recommendations developed in the rounds to improve patient safety and provide quality care.
