Stat C platform comes together in Norway fjord

Mating the steel platform decks of the Statfjord C structure with the concrete gravity-base structure (GBS) used a technique of ballasting the GBS with seawater in a protected deep-water site. The deck structure arrived by barge and was positioned over the GBS during a slow deballasting procedure. The joined structure rises more than 135 feet above the waterline. The author describes the meticulous planning to achieve a perfect fit, which required tolerances within eight mm. 2 figures.
