Generate the Ultimate Longitudinal Strength of Damaged Container Ship Considering Random Geometric Properties Under Combined Bending Moment

2021
In this paper the ultimate longitudinal strength of a container ship in grounding and collision cases is generated by Monte Carlo simulation with 10000 samples, the effect of randomness in an extent damaged dimension of collision and grounding scenarios, yield strength and plate thickness of midship section will be considered. For each sample, the ultimate longitudinal strength is obtained by using the simplified incremental-iteractive method under combined vertical and horizontal bending moments. The comparison results of non-dimensional combined ultimate bending moments Mu/Mp are performed at the angle 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° of heeling angles in midship section. The ultimate strength results of both intact and damaged conditions have differences between deterministic and randomness simulation. The COV correspond the neutral axis angles at 0° and 360° is always smaller than at 180°, the values of ultimate strength where angles of neutral axis between 90° to 180° and 270° to 360° are further away from the intact one for collision, and opposite phenomenon for grounding.
