Granulocytic ehrlichiosis in an HIV-positive patient

2002
In recent years, organisms of the genus Ehrlichia have been recognized as causes of human tick-borne infections. The 2 most commonly encountered organisms are Ehrlichia chaffeensis, which causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), and the yet-unnamed agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE). HME has been reported in only 1 patient with AIDS. Here we describe a prolonged course of HGE in an HIV-infected patient and review the literature concerning HGE.
