Developing definitions of reform in the church in the ninth and tenth centuries

The article traces use of the words reformare and reformatio in the ninth and tenth century, establishing that the use of these words in the context of institutional change in the church, which was very rare, can be linked to worries about the government of monasteries expressed in early tenth-century church councils.
