This article describes methods and equipment used for microtunneling, which is remotely controlled methods of horizontal earthboring. These methods permit accurate monitoring and adjusting of the alignment and grade as the work proceeds so that the pipe can be installed on precise line and grade. These are mainly non-personnel entry tunnel boring machines. The microtunneling method is usually subdivided into two major groups, described in this article: slurry method, and auger method.
