A process for preparing N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) by continuous reaction of methyl acetate (MeOAc) with dimethylamine (DMA) in the presence of a basic catalyst, wherein MeOAc as a methanolic solution and per mole of MeOAc in the range from 0.0002 to 0.09 mol catalyst is used and is carried bar the reaction at a temperature in the range of 90 to 140 ° C and at an absolute pressure in the range 10 to 30
