Characteristics of hospitalized HIV infected patients in one grade A tertiary general hospital in Urumqi

Objective To study the characteristics of hospitalized HIV patients. Methods Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect HIV antibody of all the hospitalized patients in People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Urumqi from May 2013 to January 2015. The positive results were confirmed by western blot (WB). The epidemiological investigations were then carried out for the patients. Results Among 152 633 cases, 149 was tested positive and the positive rate was 0.98‰. Ratio of positive results in male and female was 1.92: 1. There were statistical difference in HIV positive rates (P<0.05) in different genders, ethnic groups (Uygur vs Han) and age groups (20-39 and 40-49 age group), respectively. Sexual transmission and drug abuse were the main routes of transmission. Conclusions There are HIV infections among hospitalized patients, and the incidences of infection in the young and middle-aged persons were the highest. It is important to carry out education and regular inspection of HIV among patients. Key words: HIV; Screening; Antibody
