Advanced Prostate Cancer Therapy with Yttrium-90 Citrate

1997
The systemic therapy of advanced prostate cancer, which progressed in spite of radical prostectomy, external radiation therapy, hormonal management, chemotherapy, and metastron therapy, has been achieved with i.v. injection of prostate cancer-affine yttrium-90 citrate solution, containing both cationic and anionic species. The total-body Bremsstrahlung imaging technique, introduced by us, has shown the concentration of the radionuclide both in the primary prostate cancer and in the bone metastases which had been seen a week earlier on bone scan with Tc-99m-MDP. The myelodepression caused by repeated injection of the radionuclide is the side-effect to be avoided. Other Y-90 prostate cancer-affine radiopharmaceuticals free from this disadvantage are under investigation.
