Distributed QoS Aware Meta-Routing for IoT/CPS

Communication among devices in Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is an essential feature for these systems. For the sake of simplicity and reliability, many IoT and CPS solutions support homogeneous/single network deployment. However, when the complexity of the system and the number of device vendors continue to grow, it is challenging, if not impossible, to build CPS and IoT systems with devices using single communication protocol. The targeted problem of this paper is to support QoS guarantee in IoT/CPS applications in heterogeneous networks. In particular, the IoT devices may experience transient link changes from time to time. The QoS requirements targeted in this papers include timeliness and reliability. Comparing to QoS transmission in wireless sensor networks, the major challenges in IoT systems is to support heterogeneous networks and timely data processing. IoT applications specify its QoS requirement on timeliness and reliability, and proposed QoS aware meta-routing protocol will determine the routes based on those requirements. Node failure and node mobility are taken into account during meta-routing to ensure the quality of transmission. The proposed meta-routing algorithm is implemented in WuKong middleware.
