In Germany Clostridium (C.) perfringens type A belongs to the most important toxigenic microorganisms causing food poisoning in man. This overview focuses on important aspects of the significance of C. perfringens in the field of food hygiene. The role of this toxigenic microorganism causing food poisoning cases are demonstrated. Finally, procedures for the confirmation of C. perfringens being the cause of food poisoning cases are demonstrated. The correct assessment of epidemiological interrelations strictly requires the knowledge of the facts compiled in this article.
