2008

As I drove downtown into Washington to teach a class at our university, I heard the news of the first plane on the car radio, and I assumed it to be an accident. I also noticed, but failed to understand, a dark mass of clouds ahead of me, over the Pentagon, spreading into the blue sky. When I parked the car and walked to my office, some half-dozen blocks from the White House, I found it odd how many people on the street seemed intensely engaged with their cell phones, none of which apparently worked.
