We critique the construct of authentic leadership, including the conflation of authenticity with leadership and the assumption that extensive self-knowledge, including moral self-knowledge, is necessary to be authentic. Instead we argue for an aspirational approach to authenticity that is best pursued under conditions of the rarely noted virtue humility.
