Today's most advanced authentication methods are biometric identification capabilities. Biometric identification is becoming more and more widespread, but its large-scale application is yet to come. The main reason for this may be the lack of appropriate systems and costly technical implementation. It would also be advisable to develop a biometric system for more reliable authentication in the field of criminal enforcement. Identifying people getting into the penitentiary institute requires significant attention. It could happen that not the right person appear when going to the institution. The aim of the publication is to give a comprehensive overview about prisoner identification, laws and their application in practice. The personnel must check the identity of the convict by checking personal data can be found in the personal documents and in the criminal registration system. Currently according to the Hungarian laws, the biometric identification in the penitentiary institutes is applied during the affiliation.
