New developments in nautical consultancy and training

1993
The two topics in this paper are simulator training and the use of expert options in the early design phase of nautical infrastructure. Expert opinion methods are discussed as a way to use the knowledge of pilots in the design of harbours and approach channels. The method of pairwise comparisons offers an effective way to extend the number of design options to be evaluated in the preliminary design phase. In the following design stages the method can add information to the results given by a ship manoeuvring simulator study which is envisaged for the determination of the final lay-out and the admittance policy. In the second part, the need for full-mission simulator training, i.e. procedure training, skill training and familiarisation training is summed up. In addition, a short description is given of the Training Evaluation System (TES), which helps to increase and quantify the effectiveness of the simulator training.
