Tooth Preparations for Amalgam Restorations

2020
This chapter describes the principles associated with the preparation of posterior teeth to receive amalgam restorations. Due to its nonadhesive characteristics, the preparation must follow many rules in order to provide retention and resistance to the restoration, increasing its durability. The preparation of Class I cavities of small to large dimensions is described, as well as the preparations involving the proximal surface (Class II), using the access through the occlusal or buccal/lingual surfaces. The preparation of Class V lesions is also explained, indicated on areas where the control of moisture is difficult, which is a counterindication for adhesive restoration. The operative steps are followed in each situation, allowing the application of the restorative material to protect the remaining tooth structure.
