Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is primarily a disease of the immunocompromised host and in most cases, JC virus, a human papovavirus, is the etiologic agent Although infection with JC virus is common, PML is not PML has a marked predilection for hemispheric white matter. Until recently, most patients with PML had an underlying lymphoreticular malignancy but now AIDS is preeminent and therefore is considered as an "opportunist" disease. In this article, we tried to emphasize the importance of the differential diagnosis with other pathologies able to be submitted to medical treatment with a better prognosis.
