Continuing gastric secretion after insulin hypoglycemia despite glucose injection

1967
In gastric fistula dogs actively secreting under the influence of insulin hypo-glycemia, the injection of 25 gm. glucose, I.V., 30 min. after injection of insulin, reduced acid and pepsin output by about 60–65%, but only for 45 min. In other experiments, glucose injected 90 min. after injection of insulin reduced acid by 35% but did not reduce pepsin secretion. This suggests that the response of the gastric secretory vagus to insulin is not a simple all-or-none mechanism related solely or even critically to the concentration of glucose in the blood or brain.
