ACCELERATION CREATES RAPID REWARD : FASTER CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES IMPROVE WORK-ZONE SAFETY AND ARE PREFERRED BY MOTORISTS

2001
Accelerated construction techniques, including road closures, are being used more often to speed highway repairs and keep work crews safe. Public education efforts reduce traffic through a work zone and fast-curing cements speed re-opening times. The article describes a reconstruction project, studied by the Innovative Pavement Research Foundation (IPRF), American Concrete Pavement Association and researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, that demonstrated that the reconstruction of 1.7 lane miles of pavement in a weekend was feasible. Accelerated construction is a priority area of research for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Technology Implementation Group.
