Molecular Study of Streptococcus mutans Biofilms

2017
Biofilms, in general, have an organized structure. They are composed of microcolonies of bacterial cells non-randomly distributed in a shaped matrix of glyoccalyx. In the deeper plaque layers, which are dense, microbes are bound together in a polysaccharide matrix with other organic and inorganic materials. The superficial layers are loosely bound and appear largely irregular in structure extending to the surrounding medium.Streptococcus mutans is the main causative micro-organism for dental caries and is one of the pioneer bacterial colonies in oral biofilms. This is a literature review of the molecular studies of Streptococcus mutans biofilms.
