Greenhouse gas capture and conversion

2020
Abstract In this chapter, it is mainly explained how greenhouse gases (GHGs) effect the climatic condition on the planet. It is explained how carbon is captured and stored and how this can be successfully implemented to nullify the greenhouse issue at a global level. The most unique and interesting part of this chapter is the explanation of the advanced techniques involved in carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in order to produce value-added chemicals. The future prospect of the utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a feedstock for value-added chemicals through carboxylation and reduction reactions is a matter that is interesting and helpful in maintaining atmospheric oxygen. The potential utilization of CO2, captured at power plants, has been also been taken up as the need of the times for petrochemical industries. The different possible options to develop CO2-based energy vectors are explained with suitable model systems. The author explains new technology that would react CO2 with water or other liquids and, with further processing, produce a flow of electrons that make up electric current. This could produce about 1570 billion kilowatts of additional electricity annually if CO2 is harvest from power plants, industry, and residences.
