Gear shaving center for FMS

Abstract After consideration of the actual use of gears and their geometric parameters, shaving operations are discussed with the emphasis on the cutter and the operation sequence. The development of the shaving machine shows the significance of the introduction of computer-numerical control (CNC) for increasing machine productivity and product consistency: automatic loaders allow the handling of parts from different machines in a cell or in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) where direct numerical control (DNC) is adopted. The diagnostic problems are also discussed along with consideration of an automatic solution involving interaction between the manufacturer and the user through a telephone system using modems.
