A 2D Euler Solver for Real Gas Flows using an Adaptive Grid

Within the framework of the collaboration between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology-Lausanne and CERFACS in Toulouse, a 2D Euler solver for Real gas flows has been developed. Three different methods to account for the effects of Equilibrium air chemistry in the flowfield were incorporated in the solver. These methods are discussed and compared in this paper. To improve the shock capturing capabilities of the numerical scheme, an adaptive grid generator based on molecular dynamics has been connected to the Euler solver. At present, the adaptive grid is used to capture both internal and external shock waves. Several strategies to adapt the grid are discussed and compared. It is concluded that the use of an adaptive grid improves the solution near shock waves, and can lead to a faster convergence.
