Effect of oral calcium sequestrants on urinary calcium excretion
1982
Abstract Studies to determine the feasibility of using soluble and lightly crosslinked carboxylic polymers as calcium sequestrants in the treatment of urolithiasis were conducted in normal rats and dogs. Soluble polyacrylic acid was found to increase fecal calcium and to decrease urinary calcium. There was also an enhancement of urinary phosphate excretion. The changes in urinary and fecal electrolyte excretion were significantly greater than those seen with cellulose phosphate, a known calcium sequestrant.
