Response of Buffalograss and Bermudagrass to Reduced Irrigation Practices Under Semiarid Conditions

ABSTRACT Turfgrass consumes large quantities of the urban water. This irrigation study was conducted to evaluate and compare Common, Prairie, and Texoka buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt) Engelm.] with TexTurf 10 bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) for turf quality and root-length density. Irrigation influence on turf quality, turf density, survivability, and root-length density were investigated in Lubbock, Texas. During the 1993 and 1994 growing seasons, full (50 cm) and half (25 cm) irrigation treatments were found to be the same in turf production and better than nonirrigated treatments. Irrigation quantity rather than turfgrass type seems to be the controlling factor.
