Glíman við þögn Guðs í kvikmynd Martins Scorsese, Silence

Greinin fjallar um kvikmynd Martins Scorsese, Silence, sem er byggð a samnefndri skaldsogu eftir japanska rithofundinn Shusaku Endo. Þar segir fra tveimur jesuitaprestum sem halda til Japans i leit að laerifoður sinum, en sogusagnir hofðu borist um að hann hefði afneitað tru sinni. Þegar þeir koma til Japans maeta þeim grimmilegar ofsoknir gegn kristnu folki. Sagan fylgir einkum oðrum þeirra en tru hans er alvarlega ognað þegar hann upplifir þogn Guðs i þeim hraeðilegu aðstaeðum sem hann faer að reyna. Gliman við fjarveru og þogn Guðs andspaenis reynslunni af boli og þjaningu hefur longum orðið monnum ihugunarefni og ma sja daemi um slikt viða, t.d. i harmljoðum og salmum Gamla testamentisins. I greininni verður skoðað hvernig Scorsese tekst a við þa glimu i kvikmyndinni i ljosi kaþolsks bak-grunns hans. Jafnframt er skoðað hvernig samsomunin við Krist og þjaningar hans reynist ahugaverður tulkunarrammi fyrir kvikmyndina. Abstract The article focuses on Martin Scorsese's film, Silence, which is based on a novel by Shusaku Endo. The story is about two Jesuit priests who go to Japan in search of their mentor, because of rumors that he had denied his faith. When they come to Japan, they face fierce persecution against Christian people. After the death of one of them the story follows the other one. His faith is seriously threatened when he experiences God's silence in these terrible circumstances. The struggle with the absence and silence of God when facing suffering and pain has long been a matter of contemplation. Examples of such are widely seen, e.g. in the lamentations and hymns of the Old Testament. The article examines how Scorsese's film deals with that struggle in the light of his Catholic background.
