Furrow Infiltration Under Surge Flow IrrigatGranular Insecticide Application for Corn Rootworm Control ion

1983
ABSTRACT OPTIMUM placement of granular insecticide for corn rootworm larval control is in a shallow band incorporated over the corn row. Commercial equipment, not designed to close the seed furrow ahead of the applicator, may place insecticide in the furrow. Phytotoxic insecticides placed in the seed furrow can injure corn. This problem can be alleviated by mounting the insecticide applicator behind the planter press wheels. The greatest amount of incorporation (approximately 95%) was obtained when granules were applied in front of the planter press wheels and incorporated with spring tines. A subsurface applicator was developed to improve insecticide distribution in the soil and decrease the number of granules on the soil surface.
