Reporting of Genetic Variants by Diagnostic Laboratories and other Centres.

2012
If health science is to benefit from the major advances in genetics occurring at an accelerating pace, it is imperative that holders of variant information take the initiative to submit variants to public databases. Curators do not know all labs which have relevant information, so it is appropriate that potential submitters make themselves known to database curators. Assistance can be sought from individual curators of LSDBs, or more broadly from organisations which aim to develop systems and standards for variant submission and online storage. Longer term goals of automated and comprehensive systems are a work-in-progress. Curators are willing to assist in any way to make the task of variant submission as effortlessly as possible. Submission of variants to LSDBs is a worthy task and should be part of the daily work flow and accredited Standard Operating Procedures in diagnostic labs.
