Markedness in Systems of Kin Classification
1987
J. Greenberg's hypotheses about markedness relations in systems of kin classification are reassessed and revised. It is shown that markedness may be associated with polysemy by specialization or with polysemy by generalization. The latter association is especially common in systems of kin classification because of the egocenteredness of such systems and because of the relative-product nature of the relations they include.
