Analysis and design of efficient IPT wireless charging systems for electric vehicle

2017
Wireless power transfer is becoming increasingly popular and used in a number of applications including smart phones and electric vehicles (EVs). Therefore, the design of power-efficient wireless charging systems is a critical task. This paper focuses on the inductive power transfer (IPT) technology for EV wireless charging applications. Specifically, power pads with a double D topology are adopted in the IPT-based charging systems. The double D topology pads yield a better power transfer efficiency than the polarized solenoid and single-sided circular pads in EV charging scenario. By analyzing various key parameters of the pads via numerous simulations, e.g., pad dimension, number of turns in the coils, and structure of the ferrite core, we provide insights and guidelines for designing efficient IPT-based wireless charging systems with double D pads.
