Re: Dietary Interventions for Preventing Complications in Idiopathic Hypercalciuria

2015
Editorial Comment: This epidemiological cohort study demonstrated that the consumption of red meat and poultry was associated with an increased risk of kidney stones, while there was no correlation with total protein consumption. The consumption of fresh fruit, a vegetarian diet and diets in which the major animal protein source is fish was associated with a decreased stone risk. The latter findings are reflective of the tenets of the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which has also been reported to reduce stone risk. A unique finding of this study is that calcium consumption did not correlate with stone risk.
