Short-term results of breast-conserving surgery with intraoperative radiotherapy

2010
Objective To evaluate the feasibility and short-term efficacy of breast-conserving surgery with intraoperative radiotherapy in patients with early-stage invasive breast cancer.MethodsThirty-six patients(group A) with early-stage invasive breast cancer received intraoperative radiotherapy with 21 Gy electrons at 9 Mev and other 41 patients(group B) received conventional postoperative whole-breast radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery. The time, cost and toxicity of radiotherapy, comestic results, recurrence and metastasis events, time of operation and wound healing were compared. Results Compared with group B,group A was with shorter time(3-5 min for 1 time vs.3-5 min for 25-30 times) and less money \[(3300±135) yuan vs.(13 800±566) yuan\],better body satisfaction (97.2% vs. 87.8%) and less side effects, but with longer time for operation\[(128±18) min vs.(94±12) min\] and for wound healing\[(13.8±2.4) d vs.(8.1±1.8) d\].Conclusion The intraoperative radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery has the advantages of lower cost, shorter time, accurate dose delivery, good comestic results and protection of adjacent tissues.
