Chirality in Nuclei

In recent years, one of the most interesting and challenging aspects in high-spin nuclear structure physics has been to prove experimentally the existence of static nuclear chirality. The occurrence of chirality will provide a unique test for the existence of stable triaxial nuclear shapes at moderate spins. A large number of experimental investigations have, therefore, been undertaken during the last about a decade, in a number of nuclei in the mass regions, A ~ 100, A ~ 130 and in some nuclei in A ~ 190. Many theoretical attempts have been made to explain and understand the phenomenon of chirality in nuclei. In the present chapter, details of this phenomenon and experimental results on the candidate chiral doublet bands in nuclei are discussed.
