Intercapsular Cataract Extraction with Single Piece Polymethylmethacrylate Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Insertion

1991
We reviewed 191 eyes following intercapsular cataract extraction with insertion of a single piece polymethylmethacrylate posterior chamber intraocular lens. Ninety-nine per cent attained a corrected acuity of 6/12 or better when pre-existing pathology is excluded. Of cases with a calculated (by SRK formula) postoperative acuity of emmetropia or 1.00 D of myopia, 63% required a spherical correction between + or −0.5 D, and 89% between + or −1.50 D. Eighty per cent of eyes required a cylindrical correction, 97% requiring 2 D or less. The lens haptics behaved similarly to polypropylene haptics in ease of insertion and the absence of lens positioning holes posed no significant problem to lens manipulation. Details of the surgical technique are presented.
