2007
The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally test the motor learning effects of interpolated activity during the post knowledge of results(KR) delay interval as a function of task(discrete vs. continuous). Forty right-handed volunteer female university students were randomly and equally assigned into four different experimental groups in a 2(interpolated activity) × 2(task type) × 10(trial blocks) factorial design with repeated-measures on the last factor. The experimental task required of subjects was to tap between two buttons with the right hand with goal movement time being 500msec either discretely(discrete task condition) or continuously(continuous task condition) with and without an interpolated activity during 15-sec post-KR delay interval. Dependent measure was absolute error(AE). It was the absolute difference between actual movement time and goal movement time, i. e, 500msec. Subject performed the experimental task 10 blocks of 5 trials in the practice phase, followed by a block of ten trials in the retention stage. Absolute timing errors were recorded automatically by computer in msec. Analyses of data using three-way ANOVA with repeated-measures on the last factor disclosed that; 1) there were statistically significant main effect of interpolated activity along with interaction effect between interpolated activity and the task type. And a significant difference was found in the task type. The results showed that interpolated activity deteriorated performance in the practice phase both on discrete and continuous tasks.; 2) also interpolated activity hindered learning on continuous task, while it was effective to learning discrete skill.
