Enürezis Tanisi Alan Çocuklarda Sosyodemografik Faktörlerin Değerlendirilmesi Evaluation of Sociodemographic Factors among Children with Enuresis

2013
Summary Background: We aimed to evaluate the sociodemographic factors related to enuresis among children admitted to our outpatient Pediatrics clinic. Methods: The data collected from the parents of 131 enuretic children were evaluated. The patients were evaluated regarding gender, age at admittance, family history of enuresis, accompanying illness, depth of sleep, treatment type, and the socioeconomic status of the family. Results: Eighty-six patients (65.6%) were males and 45 (34.4%) were females. We could not determine any difference between two genders regarding the age at admittance. Thirty-four cases (35.1%) were found to have secondary enuresis. Positive maternal, paternal and parental history for enuresis was found among 23 (11.3%), 37 (32.2%) and 7 (3.6%) patients, respectively. Fortyfour (22.8%) and 67 (34.7%) patients were found to have positive history for enuresis among siblings and relatives, respectively. Before admittance, 22 (16.7%) patients were found to be treated with a medication and 5 (3.8%) with water restriction. Regarding accompanying disease, 4 (3.05%) patients were found to have spina bifida, 15 (11.4%) constipation, 31 (23.7%) a history of urinary tract infection, and 3 (2.2%) vesicoureteral reflux. Conclusion: Every child with enuresis should be systematically evaluated because of possible accompanying organic disorders. Education of the parents regarding the curable nature of the disease and the early treatment of newly diagnosed patients should be encouraged.
